SQL 2000 Memory Configuration ! Is this right ?

  • Hello all,

I have a SQL box with around 1 Terrabyte of Data on it, queries are massively slow and everything seems to get worse once someone is running a query, it kills off everything.

The box is a Quad Xenon box with around 3.5GB of memory on it, its also running SQL enterprise, it’s a dedicated SQL box used for reporting and the adhoc queries here and there, Its on a SAN architecture with the transaction log on the same drive as the data drive.

At the moment via EM, we set it to use 3.2GB of memory, but looking at task manager, I can see the SQL only has a limit of 1.7GB, so what I am not sure of is this, what memory setting is SQL actually using ? and would I benefit from using a memory switch configuration, bearing in mind that I cant make sure of AWE, as I only have SQL 2k standard and SQL Enterprise 2000.

If my CPU utilization level is also reaching 100%, could this be due to a memory problem ?

    Can anyone help ?

  • If you're using SQL2000 SE, you can't use AWE and so cannot allocate more than 2Gb of memory.
