The news is notorious for building up a bunch of hype for the things that are going to kill us all.
Right know my mental count down is on the Mayan Calendar.
Here's a couple of things I can remember.
Y2K was supposed to be the End of the world, because time cannot continue after triple 000's occur; also, everything electronic was supposed to shut down.
The Bird Flu virus was supposed to sweep accross the world and kill us all.
What can you remember?

So we've got so far:
1. Mayan calendar runs out...
2. Y2K bug
3. Bird Flu
4. Red Sox winning the World Series
Hmm, are you looking for things that would "destroy the earth" or things that would "end human civilization as we know it," or what?
One from my formative years was always a nuclear war, the US and Soviets going at it full-out with nukes...

Potential world enders:
Godzilla or any of his friends except Mothra
Population explosion
Nuclear winter
Zombies
The Andromeda strain (or Captain Tripps, the T-virus or any of a number of mutated viruses)
Any large space rock
Agressive E.T.s
Triffids
Mutated crops spawned from run-away genetic mutations
Plain old human stupidity in numerous forms
According to my Mother, my moving to Washington in 1982
According to my daughters, the requirement that they be home by midnight
Accoding to my Boss, the 2 day delay in the project I'm working on due to 2 days of the flu
Just my 2 cents...

In the 1970's it was global cooling. The next ice age was coming and we were supposed to prepare. In the present, it's warming. It's been so inconsistent through the years that it's now being called global climate change so it covers either depending on which one actually happens.

did you mean 'nigh'? The end of the world is nigh?
nigh/ni/Adverb: 1.Near: "departure time was nigh"; "they drew nigh unto the city".
2.Almost: "nigh on a thousand acres all told"; "a car weighing nigh on two tons"; "recovery will be well nigh impossible".
