    Ach... I used that msdn article as my reference before answering the question. However, nowhere does it mention "Software NUMA" but instead uses "Soft-NUMA" (which was not an answer option), especially when referring to SMP architecture.

    Therefore this led me to believe "Software NUMA" was a trick, so I went for SMP as "Soft-NUMA" seemed to be originally designed to combat this architecture.

    Ah well... at least I still learned something new :unsure:

    Thanks for the question - a subject area I had no idea about, until reading the linked MSDN article (after getting the answer wrong, of course!). Exactly what QotD should do for us.

    Nice simple question.

    I guess about two thirds getting it right is reasonable, as it's something a lot of people will not have come across. But currently 16% have picked "SMP" which startled me - evidently they don't see that S (Symmetric) and NU (NonUniform) are orthogonal/independent, as are MP (MultiProcessing) and MA (Memory Access). Unless they just don't know what the acronyms stand for.

    As Soft-NUMA was primarily designed to combat SMP architecture I think it is a fairly understandable error to make.
