Can't log in as new domain user

  • I created a new domain user (and admin) on my server, and I'm having trouble getting it logged in for whatever reason. I've created a sysadmin login in SQL Server for this Windows account as well. It works if I leave in the "BUILTIN\Administrators" login, but I am trying to remove that login. However, as soon as I take that out and try to connect using the single new user's SQL login, I can't connect (Msg 18456, Level 16, State 1; [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user ''). Yes, I'm using the format \.

    Any ideas?

  • This is a fairly simple process, and it's likely that you have some typo, or the account isn't set up the same as you expect.

Double check that this is the proper user that is logged in and added to SQL Server.

Did you use the GUI and check the name (spelling/format/domain)

  • I resolved it, but I haven't a clue as to why. It wasn't a typo; Enterprise Manager won't let you create a login with Windows authentication if the Windows account doesn't exist. I ended up deleting the login and recreating it and that took care of it, even though all the settings were absolutely identical (I even checked syslogins before and after and compared it to other accounts to verify this). Either a bug or something I simply don't understand.

  • Strange. Thanks for the update, and glad it's working.
