SQL 2000 Cannot login!

  • I recently applied SP4 to one of my SQL 2000 servers. I also disabled the BUILT-IN Administrators account for security reasons. Although I have an sa login and 2 AD accounts on their as SysAdmins I now cannot login to the database whichever way I try.

    Help!

Does this mean I have to reinstall SQL 2000 to SP4?

  • Is your server set to only integrated or mixed mode auth? If it's not Mixed Mode the SA won't help, although you can go into the registry and change that.

The domain accounts, were they members of sysadmin or were they members of sysadmin via the local admins group which you just disabled?

  • THE AD Accounts were members of SysAdmin within SQL Server.

  • Sorry - it would have been mixed mode as well. I did log into Query Analyser to check the version number after the SP$ install so I must have been able to log in. Maybe I have deselected the Mixed Mode by mistake since then??

How do you change it in the registry?

  • So you were able to log in via QA and now you can't? No changes since you were last able to log in? Anything in the Security or application logs?

Here's the registry keys to check..

    Default instance:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSSqlserver\MSSqlServer\LoginMode

    Named instance:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Name\MSSQLServer\LoginMode

to 0 or 2 for mixed-mode or 1 for integrated.

Note The 0 and 2 values have the same functionality. They both set the security to mixed-mode.

  • Thanks Luke. I changed the value in the registrty to 2 and have managed to now login! I have since discovered that a 3rd party app that accesses the SQL database utilises the BUILTIN-Adminitsrators login which is bad news but I can't control so will have to leave enabled.

Thanks v much for your help.

  • Gotta love those 3rd parties don't you... They'll bite you everytime.

Glad you were able to get back in.
