perfmon ~ monitoring server from local pc

  • Hi

Properly simplest question ever but ah well... ! Using perfmon on my local pc to monitor a server on a different domain. If I use a counter log and set the "run as" option to [servername\serverlogon] I get

"Invalid user name or password for the "test" log session. This session will not be started."

I take it this is because that logon does not exist on the local pc and hence it fails ?

I cant use my domain account becuase the servers on a seperate domain

    any words of advice..

    thank you

    Simon

  • You can Remote Desktop in and start perfmon locally?

We use different domain here, I just ran "Performance" with Run As under different account

connect to a SQL Server, and got the CPU time and SQL Total Memory

I thought you were in danger of skewing the results if you run the perfmon on the actual server your monitoring ?

and sorry I dont understand "I just ran performance.... " ?

    best wishes simon

  • As far as I know, you will affect the performance either Remotely or Locally

    Relative Theory eh...

oh, the official window title of "perfmon" is "Performance"

    so I meant I just ran Perfmon via Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->right-click on "Performance"->Run As->enter credentials->add counter from remote SQL servers->voila

yep tried that method .. same error as when I try selecting run as within perfrom. The account Im selecting is a local windows account on the target server .. and Im guessing I need a domain account ... but then as its on a different domain ..

ahh well its friday and many thanks for your help 🙂

  • For you Run As credential

    can you try SERVERNAME\account?

if you don't have the NewDomain\WindowsAccount

and is that local account Administrator?

worst case, Remote Desktop in and start perfmon
