We have had trouble in the past with Free Text Searches on one particular machine. Following advice from our SQL Support and using Microsoft article 277549 we changed the Startup service to System Account, stopped and restarted our MSSQLServer service and Microsoft Search.
However now, the MSSQLServer service starts, works for a few seconds then stops. SQLSERVERAGENT starts and remains running though MSSQLServer service stops.
Has anyone any clues? This is rather urgent

did you change the service account back to the domain account ? I'd check out the sql error logs they should tell you what is wrong, I figure your domain account has maybe the wrong password.

No we haven't as yet; we were trying to assertain that it worked before we set it back.
Should it be set back to a domain account? We don't know the password for the old domain account; will a new domain account be OK?

er yes! If you'd read the kb you'd see that it said you should change back to your domain account. Yup a new account should be ok, make sure you change it through EM , or reset the existing password and reset it in service control. Follow recommendations for setting up service accounts
