Should I use AWE?

  • I have a SQL dedicated server with 3.5 GB of RAM.  The server OS is Windows 2003 Enterprise SP1, SQL 2000 Enterprise SP4.  In task mamanger only 2 GB is used leaving 1.5 GB unused.  Performance monitor shows only 1.6 GB is used by SQL, cache hit ratio is always > 96%; other counters are showing good number.  Based on these number do I gain anything if I use the /3GB /PAE and AWE option?

    Thanks,

  • In testing I have actually seen the switch /3GB as smaller physical memory levels prevent Windows from starting. We tried the other options and always found the performance never changed. You really have to have 4GB or 16GB or more for the other options to make any difference.

If you want to experiment just be sure you are preppared for any issues as a result of your changes. But proceed with caution.

  • I would make sure that AWE is enabled and then check that you have the memory allocated to SQL to use what it needs as well. Also look to see that you leave some memory available for the OS to play around with simply because SQL is a memory hog as we all know. One last thing due to the >96% you were mentioning...make sure you have enough space allocated for your page files approx 1.5 - 2.5 times your max memory Good luck

  • /3GB will work for RAM equal to 4GB or more & less or equal to 16GB. anything above 16GB PAE is applicable & you need to take out /3GB switch.

    i hope this helps.

  • thanks guys for the input.

I will try the switch later to see how it works for us.
