CPU %usage drops down suddenly with SQL Server

  • Hello.

I'm running a SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2003 Datacenter on IA64 machine.

I have been suffered from an unsolved problem for a long time. Have you ever seen or heard this behavior?

    http://boomfiles.naver.net/data16/2007/7/4/251/CPU.jpg

    - Upper image shows CPU drop-down pattern

As you can see, CPU usage drops down all of sudden. There is no indication of this behavior. No Error message, nothing paticular in blocking and timeout. No Backup job running behind. No apparent I/O related issue.

Just, SQL Server looks like stopping query processing for 2~3 seconds(sometimes this lasts over 10 seconds). After that, it returns to normal behavior. As a result, CPU usage goes up higher than before the drop-down and keeps high CPU usage for a while.

All this happens about 10 times a day with irregularity.

Sometimes this drop-down caused server hang.

If you have any clue, please let me know. I'll be very happy with any information you give to me.

    Regards,

    Mok

  • I've got this issue on a various sql 2k/2k5 installations (not all on the same environment). Please read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810885

High-end disk subsystems may experience error 17883

The error number and message does not always come up but the symptoms are the same. To fix this, I have applied an os patch.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi, michaela. Thank you very much for your reply.

    In kb, it says

    Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This bug was corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

I've already applied SP4 to SQL Server 2000.

For more information, SQL Server 2000 is running on Windows 20003 Datacenter Ed. with SP2 since June 2007. And this problem began from Jan. 2007.

Do you think this "bug" still exists after SQL Server SP4?

    Thanks again.

  • It's not a sql bug, it relates to the os (I am aware what the article says). However, the patch I was talking about was released between win sp1 and sp2. It is strange that you described the same behaviour I am familiar with already and for what I was refering the link above. I would say that you should ask for MS support help.

  • Again, michaela.

As you said, I should contact to MS support.

Befor that, I really want to know the symptoms you'd had(new link below).

Mine is CPU Drop down to 0~20%, and occurs about 10 a day. Different from day to day. I think this is more often under I/O intensive workloads.

And Did you clean up this problem completely?

You also used high-end disk subsystems(I use Hitachi TagmaStore USP for SAN storage)?

Inferred from what you said, You might have had several sql servers with this problem. What's the smilarity of those servers?

Lots of questions....Sorry about this. ( I'm drowning.)

    Thank you.
