I have two Blackberry installations using MSDE 7 with no service packs. I have applied SP4 and MS03-031 to two other MSDE instances running other software with no problems.
On these servers, the service pack gets stuck on the screen validating the account. On one server, I used the sa to run the SP, on the other I used my login account. I let them both run for 20 minutes before killing the service pack. Restarting the server and trying again didn't help.
I'm not sure if I should just reschedule and allow 3 hours to get the service pack installed -- is it just really slow, or maybe it will never complete?
I have applied SP3 to about 30 instances of SQL 2000 and haven't had any problems like this.

I found the solution -- maybe it will help someone else.
Even though I new better, I must have tried to install the service pack via Terminal Services. I have been installing MS03-031 on almost 50 assorted SQL instances with TS. This weekend, I made sure I was using a non-session technology to remote control the servers, and I was successful in installing the service pack.
