I would say that the fastest way to grow would be to work on many different projects as either a dba or developer. Nothing surpasses experience.
You also have to understand failure.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Generally you don't see that kind of behavior in a major appliance.

Not really topic related, but...
There is a really great book by Dietrich Dörner around
Die Logik des Misslingens
Strategisches Denken in komplexen Situationen
which translates to
The logic of failure
Strategical thinking in complex situations
Highly recommended

If you mean this on http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201479486/qid=1069831653/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-2394228-9088743?v=glance&n=507846 , yes, looks pretty much like the same book, although the german cover is less spectacular.
He has, among other, a brilliant explanation, why things in Tschernobyl back in 1986 went the way they did.

Now, for the poor rest it's called Chernobyl

Back to the main topic, I'd say as much reading and interaction as you can manage. We all tend to be limited by our environment, nice to talk to people who do different things.

Well, err, yes Andy is right. Getting back on track.
Several threads here on this site, can't find any in my archive right now, but in addition to what already has been said, I would like to add the most important one is your own willingness and desire to learn (more). Second is to practice (if possible on many different projects), third (and what I did (had to do)) is see things you've developed from a different point of view, I mean, implement it at your customer, do helpdesk tasks on it. ...

Three things that worked best for me. 1) Being lucky enough to have a good mentor. 2) Liking to read.
3) Being thrown from the frying pan into the fire, as the saying goes. Amazing how quickly you can learn in a "sink or swim" environment!

Thanks for the responses guys.Back to the issue of books.
Any one with a book that probably made a great impact?
I do not have many of the desirable circumstances just listed but hey
a good book can be read anywhere /in any circumstance
