Detecting MSDE

  I'm trying to find a way that we can detect the presence of MSDE when doing a network scan. So far, I've not found a file or registry key that specifically shows MSDE, just either MSDE or SQL Server. Anyone have a way to do this?

  You could try this registry key:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\MSDE

  Or just try to connect to each box on 1433 with sa <blank password>.
