Standby Server & AWE

  • I have a SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition "Production Server" that is configured for AWE memory. This Server has only one instance/engine.

I have a SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition "Standby Server" at our revcovery site that is not configured for AWE memory.

What will happen when I go to our recovery site and restore(from "Production" Full DB Backups) --> Master, MSDB, Model, plus all User databses?

Will the SQL Server engine start up?(The Master DB is from the Production AWE-configured Server)

  • I'll have to admit not testing this completely, but I have moved db's fron an AWE server to one that is not. I would expect the only difference is how much memory you have to work with and how it impacts performance, but no other issues.

  • I read into this when I was setting up a similar site. If you enable AWE on a box that does not have enough RAM to support it (3GB or more) or the /PAE switch set in the boot.ini, then the setting is ignored.

  • Yes, SQL only check if valid at startup so only one check of it anyway. Should be a non-issue.
