Merge 2005, 2008 into one forum instead of separate ones?

  • Just a suggestion:

Maybe merge all the forums about different SQL versions into a single one.

So just TSQL instead of TSQL for 05 and 08 and some day 2011 or 12 or whatever the next version is.

Instead perhaps just a single forum and then when you post you could have a drop down box that lets you pick which version you are talking about.

http://www.utteraccess.com does that for its Access posts and it seems to work well IMHO.

It would just make it easier to follow all the threads, and most things don't differ THAT much between versions.

But if I'm using SQL 05 only I may not read the 08 forums and vice versa so people may be less able to read and post due to a divided readership focus.

Also... it just seems wrong to not have those tables normalized!

    😉

  • It's not a bad idea. What I think we would like to move to is more of a tag based system, like at ask.sqlservercentral.com.

  • I did not know that existed, I will have to spend some time on that part of the site... though at the same time I also fear it 😉

(I always disliked overly tagged forums and preferred more classic forums, though the ideas of flagging responses as "helpful" and "answer" are appealing)

Does the ASK site risk cannibalizing participation in the current forums, does it increase participation, appeal to an entirely new readership?

Just curious what your findings have been with that.

Though I can see a benefit to a more direct Q&A setup, but at the same time do you lose some of the "wisdom" that might have come from a more detailed in-depth discussion of the pros/cons of the approach? (Or is that where the OP should have posted in the forums if they were seeking enlightenment along with their answer?)
