Remote Access Failure to register in EM

  • We have a remote SQL Server 2000 SP4 that appears OK apart from our inablity to register it in a number of local EMs.

Telnet to server on port 1433 is OK. TCP/IP is configured and working (and for security reasons it doesn't respond to ).

When we try register the server in EM it fails because logon for either of two users (both administrators) fails.

Apart from re-installing I really don't know what to try next, suggestions appreciated.

  • What are you client OS's? XP SP2 perhaps? Have you looked at your Firewall settings? You will need to open TCP port 1433 and UDP port 1434. That is assuming your server is running on the default ports. To check that go to the server (or a client that can connect) Open the Server Network Utility, ensure TCP/IP is in the Enabled area. Sleect it and click the properties button, this should give you the port you are running on.

  • Client O/S are W2000. Not sure how it can be a firewall problem when I can telnet to port 1433. TCP/IP is enabled on Server Network Utility and listening on port 1433.

Why doed port 1434 need to be open?

  • 1434 is the listner service if it is blocked you must know the port that your server is running on and specify this in your connections.

Are you using Windows authentication or SQL? If windows, are you sure you are being authenticated? (Novell client will block authentication...)

  • I know the server is running on port 1433, hence testing the telnet connection to this port (which works).

I am using SQL authentication. Novell is not used.
