log & backup files change w/o activities

  • I have a SQL 2000 w/ SP4 instance.  The databases have no activities but when I check the DB & LOG backup they seem to change between backup.  I profile the server but no user connections so it's definitely no app activities. I were wondering if anyone understand what the system is doing that causes the size of backup files to growth & shrink.  The only jobs running on the server is Full DB backup nightly and Trans LOG backup twice a day.    thanks in advance..

  • Is the database definately read-only?

Is there any maintenance, such as reindexing, defragging?

    Any bulk inserts?

Also, monitor the physical size of the data & log files and also the percentage used through the day.  You will see the percentage used grow if any changes are being made.

  • Database is in normal state.  Maintenance is being done on a weekly basis.  There's a daily backup at 10AM it's 200KB and a 4PM and it's 140KB.  The files are consistenty this size every day for as long as the files are kept.  And then the database backup file increase by 128KB from Saturday night to Sunday night backup for the 3 wks backup we keep.

I was just wondering if there any system process that could of cause the size to change.
  • What about unchecking Auto Updating Statistics for the database in question ...
