Clustered SQL2K - install additional SQL instance in EXISTING SQL instance resource group

  • Working on an existing SQL2K 2-node cluster, we're interested in installing a new instance of SQL Server but want to do it in the cluster resource group for an existing instance of SQL.  We need a new instance because the database it will be serving has specific security requirements that cannot be met within the existing instance.  However, we use SAN replication to replicate the existing SQL instance disk volumes to our DR site and would therefore like to put the databases served by this new instance on the same SAN volumes so it can be replicated as well.  So, this would basically result in a single cluster resource group that has two sets of network names and IP addresses, two named SQL instances and one set of shared disk volumes.

Would the SQL clustered install even let you do this?  I don't recall whether you're given the choice of using an existing cluster group or whether SQL just creates its own cluster group.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks

  • Based on my undersatnding, SQL Server cluster has only one instance. If you would like to add a new instance, you have to create another SQL Server group.
