I installed Sql Server 2000 Developer with all the SP's on Vista Business - Vista said it was not compatible but I did it anyway. I needed to run a test with SS2000 and Office 2007 Enterprise on Vista.
BTW - I had previously installed SS 2005 Dev on Vista Business; Vista said that it was not compatible either, but SP2 took care of that issue. I've since reformatted and reinstalled the OS.
SS2000 works just fine, but now the Vista Sync Center shows up and it wants to "sync" Sql Server 2000 but I don't have any replication options set up in EM.
Any ideas how to make the Sync Center go away? I've tried to disable the Sync Center and mobsync.exe, but no luck.
This is just a test PC, so I'll try any suggestions the group might offer.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Rudy, You mentioned that you're using Standard Edition...
AFAIK only the Developer Edition will allow you install the actual database engine with all the extras on a non-server OS, that's why the client tools were your only options on Vista; the same holds true for XP and Win 2K.

Thanks for the confirmation William. You have confirmed what I had thought. Just got this new Visa laptop to begin familiarization and testing for our site. What a different 'computing experience' ... I have managed to lock it up 3 times in the last month ... oh well at elast we will nto be rolling it out to our user community for a while ... we are now just finishing up on XP - only about 1500 ... have a great day !

Slightly off-topic...
Still trying to turn off the Vista sync center, because it still wants to sync "SQL Server 2000" (the exe, not the databases, which I suppose might make sense, maybe sometimes) so I google'd "vista disable sync center" and found many comments how it doesn't work with many portable devices that used to work with ActiveSync in XP, can't seem to make it stop etc. Funny thing, Google showed a link to THIS THREAD on the first page of the search results.
I may have found the answer - first I ran (Sysinternals) Process Explorer to kill the process itself (and the icon disappeared from the system tray), then tried to rename the file to mobsync.ex_ but even as Administrator I wasn't allowed to do that. Then I ran regedit and searched for mobsync.exe which AFAIK is the villian behind the sync center. Every time I found that string, I deleted the string but left the value blank. After a reboot, no more stink center. I mean sync center, sorry 😉

thank u for quick reply
u mean to say SS2000 can install on "vista developer edition" not on vista server..

Is there a vista developer edition????
I have Vista Ultimate
I installed the developer version of sql 2000 and SQL Express 2005 (that comes with visual studio.net 2005) on a brand new computer with Vista. I just ignored the warning messages. i was able to install vb6 also.
If I couldn't do that, i was going to have to dual boot.

Follow-up re: Sql 2000 on Vista.
My customer finally upgraded to Sql 2005, so I didn't need this test setup and I went to uninstall 2000. I used the Sql 2000 Dev CD and selected the "remove existing installation" and it worked for a while but then the uninstaller crashed - Vista offered the options of either "close the program" or "search online for a solution" but of course it provided no help whatsoever.
It did in fact remove the services, and Sql 2000 no longer appeared in the list of installed programs, but it left behind all the actual program files but I was able to just delete the entire Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder.
This makes me wonder if it was actually the InstallShield installer program that is not compatible with Vista, since Sql 2000 worked just fine.

Hey William.
If you have Office 2007 installed, then you don't need Sql Server 2000. You should have Access 2007 installed, so that should meet all of your database needs, right?

Hi Will, very funny. But my original post stated that "I needed to run a test with SS2000 and Office 2007 Enterprise on Vista." and here I am using Access for rapid development of a front-end to the SQL database for data queries and reporting. Most of the queries are SQL pass-thrus, or they execute stored procedures on the server. I also provide some linked tables with select-only permissions so the power users can roll their own queries if need be.
On the other hand, Access 2007 is a giant step backward from the 97-2003 versions. Gone: replication; workgroup security that allowed creating groups and users & assigning table-level permissions for select, insert, update, delete; database encryption; the database window is now a single-column navigation panel; ALL the built-in toolbars being replaced by the dopey ribbon.

I was just giving you a little crap about Access. If I could offer any insight into your problem (besides using Access) I would. I have not yet made the move to Vista yet. I really like XP. I am waiting for a service pack or two to come out for Vista before I move. Good luck with your problem.

Will, I knew that, no problemo.
The original problem is gone, now that I've removed all traces of Sql 2000 from the Vista machine.
However, now I have tennis elbow from installing Sql 2005 Dev "this program has known compatibility issues" and then clicking Run this program. Over and over and over again.
