Clustering Issue

  • I have a question in Sql2000 clustering. We have a 2 node Active/passive cluster.I need to create a shared folder on these node which users are going to access.I need to create folder on both the nodes ,so that when we failover to 2nd node users can have still access on folder. My question is instead of creating folder on both nodes is there any way I can create folder on shared disk resources .If so how can I do that.Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi,

Is the cluster currently in a production environment? I am willing to bet that you would need setup the share on the shared-disk as you would normally, then move the group and configure the share on the shared-disk from the second node.

Have you considered not using the SQL cluster as a file server and perhaps locate the share on another more appropriately purposed server?  I'm sure there are reasons you would want to do this, but I'm curious none-the-less. If this folder isn't tied specifically to SQL server or cluster availability having the share on another server might be better in case the shared disk or cluster become unavailable for whatever reason.

Also, if you haven't already, you may want to consider purposing a server for Virtual Server and setup a cluster on it.  Its great for testing these sorts of things with out having to mess with production until you are confident of your changes.  The requirements for such a system are minimal and delivers immense benefits. Using dev or eval editions of the required software isn't a bad idea either.  MS Virtual Server is free, after all!

    Just a few thoughts.
