Applying SP4 for SQL2K

  • Good afternoon.  We are installing a new software on our network that requires SQL2K to have SP4 installed.  I have read the documentation, but still have a few questions regarding the process.  Any assistance in answering these questions would be GREATLY appreciated.

    1.  We use log-shipping to maintain a stand-by server.  Which of these servers should I apply the SP on first -- the primary or the secondary?  Should a re-boot be done in any order?

    2.  In the documentation, there was mention that with log-shipping, there was no need to make the read-only databases write-able.  However, under another section of the documentation, it said that this process had to be done (making the databases write-able).  Which is correct?

Any other hints/tips/things to look out for would also be appreciated, especially as it relates to our set-up --> SQL2K SP3/SP3a (build 8.00.760) on Windows 2K3 SP1.

    Thanks in advance.

  • No replies are necessary. We have applied the SP and all's well.

One thing to note, however, I found a post on another site that said if log-shipping is implemented on the servers that you are upgrading, that you should apply the SP to the secondary server first and then the primary.  We followed these instructions and our upgrade was successful, with the minor problem of log-shipping going down for a few minutes during the upgrade process.  It was restored automatically, however, once both machines were on the same SP level.  Thanks.

  • Thanks for the tip!  I think I would have done it otherwise; although log shipping was broken here when I arrived, and SP4 was already installed.

    Thank-you,
