Navigation links for threads

  • Is it possible to duplicate the "Next Page" "Last Page" etc. links at the top of the screen? When viewing a long thread, you have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to reach those links.

    Thanks.

  • Not right now

In code lockdown and internal testing on the next version of the site. We should have a beta for you to see in a week or so.

  • Thanks Steve.

Will that be a Beta or a CTP

  • I'm hoping a CTP!

Steve D and Steve S of Red Gate have done a great job cleaning things up and especially making my work smoother. Not a lot of enhancements you'll see, but things are cleaned up, voting on most everything, easier scheduling, self submissions and editing for authors, etc.

It looked pretty close last week when I saw it in the UK.

  • Have you set a "Launch Date" (not to be confused with "Release Date")

    Mark

  • Nope, not setting launch dates. Only release dates here. Not driven by marketing.

  • Maybe I should start a new thread for this, but I find the Active Topics feature almost unusable.

If there are more than 15 topics on a page, it gives you a link to go to the next page, but it usually does not work, and just gives you the first page again.

It would also be nicer if it displayed a lot more items on the Active Topic page.  At least 100 would be good.

  • There's a bug in here and it's caught me. I tend to scan the "Active Topics" and then pop interesting ones in a new window. If you select one, answer, go back twice, it messes up the list.

  • The Active Topic problems really makes answering questions on the forums a lot harder to do, because it's so much work to locate new postings.  It's a big reason why I spend much more time answering questions on SQLTeam.

  • I'm confused... maybe my approach to this board is dodging this bullet?

I tend to scan the list of boards as they display, and rely on the last posting date to determine whether to drill down, or not. Are you trying to select out ONLY those boards with new postings?

My browser supports multiple tabs. In my 'primary' window, I drill down to the active board, then open the threads in their own tabs and manage them separately.

SJ: Perhaps we will end up compiling a 'technique' list for successful navigation of this site - perhaps under an 'internal bug alert' board? Or some such. It's a raw thought that needs refinement.

  • If you click "Active Topics" at the top, it shows the topics with new posts since your last login. That's easier than scanning a board from the main forum page.

The new version has a few different options, but we'll get some feedback, maybe from this group , in the next week or so once we get a beta up.

  • It would also be helpful if the Active Topics highlighted topics I have already posted on.

  • That's a good one. I'll see if we can get a query for that one.

One of the issues is that we used a purchased forum code so that we didn't have to do all the smiley/WYSIWYG/etc. coding. It's not hard, but there are a lot of moving parts and it adds time.

That being said, we don't want to be hamstrung in upgrading the forums if we need to, so minimal "touching" of them is preferred.

Hopefully we'll go beta next week and I can get some feedback from you folks.
