Database Performance - File Size

    Have a Db with excess of 3 million records; have purged 95% of records and re-indexed ...

    - New Backup is 5% of original size

    - .MDF file is same size 2 Gb

    Will this affect performance ?  Should the DB now be shrunk/compacted or will this not matter providing the indexing has been done.

     

    Any advice appreciated.

    Providing the table and it's indexes are not overly fragmented it should not matter. I would do a DBCC SHOWCONTIG to check. Also If you havent got one already one of your indexes should be CLUSTERED.
