IS ANY WAY TO CHK HOW DTS PERFORMS BACK GROUND!!!!

  • HELLO FRIENDS!!!!!!!

........I WAS RUNNING DTS PACKAGES BUT I WAS NOT SURE THAT IT IS RUNNING

........SUCCESSFULLY AT BACK GROUND. WHEN I OPENED TASK MANAGER THEN THAT

........WAS SHOWING 13 TO 16% CPU USAGE. WHAT THAT MEAN???????????

CAN ANY BODY HELP ME OUT

    THANKS & REGARDS:

    Regards,

    Papillon

  • A few questions come to mind :

1 - Have you received a message explicitly telling you that the package finished or failed?

2 - How did you start the package?

3 - How long does it normally take to run the package?

4 - Is there a possible infinite loop that may "slow" the process?

The 13%-16% means nothing if you have nothing to compare that data to the normal utilization of the server.

  • You can also go into Current Activity (under Management) in Enterprise Manager and find the connection(s) that say something like DTS Designer in the Application column. If you double click on them, you can see the last batch submitted by the DTS package. You can also get a better picture of the resourcce utilization from there as well.

All this can be done in Querry Ananlyzer executing sp_who or sp_who2 and then dbcc inputbuffer. Some things are easier to do in EM, some in QA.

  • Damn I got to get on book on dts... don't know nothing about that stuff (read basic stuff) .

  • I'm never one to turn down a book, but the DTS books I've read haven't been that great. I learned more through trial and error and sites like this one and http://www.sqldts.com.

  • Tx for the tip.

  • By the way, Remi, I'm always impressed with the t-sql you (and several other people like Frank Kelis) crank out around here. That's the area I am trying to improve upon in my own skill set. Thanks for the help with that stuff!

    (sorry to hijack the thread).

  • We'll be hijaking it together...

For the tsql you'll have to stay around because I pretty much learned everything here. I mean, I knew of to do basic stuff out of school.. but this is where I really learned to code in tsql.

    Thanx guys.

  • Yep, I can get the basics done, but every once in a while I coma across someone doing something in T-SQL around here that I'd never even thought of trying. Itzik Ben-Gan's and Ken Henderson's books are great for that sort of thing as well. I need to get some of Joel Chelko's (sp?) books too.

  • I would get those books... but I got a life outside of work and I'd like to keep it that way... There's so much more to learn outside of IT.

  • Getting scuba certified and getting my MBA are in my future (long term), as well as a pint or two later tonight at the local Irish pub (ongoing)!

  • No beer for me... Trying to become a Pro in Billiards (9 ball). But I got a verrrry long way to go... Maybe you guys will see me on tv in 5+ years
