Advertisements

  • I understand the need for the advertisements to keep the site going and financially viable, but I have to say the latest LiteSpeed posting is extremely distracting. I'd like to ask that the advertisements remain motionless. or only run once. These current ones make me want to stay as far away as possible from said product

  • Well...it's energetic! We are ad supported, so we tend to give the vendor some room as long its on topic. The idea of it running once might be a good idea, we'll talk that over.

  • I shot this to DBAAssociates to see if they can fix the ad to be any less obtrusive. I tried on our side to change it to stop after one cycle but it just goes blank. They're already working on a fix. 🙂

  • Concerning the advertisements:

    Please check today's (9 July) "BOOGIE TOOLS" advertisement on the left side of the site. While you are checking it out, try and 'hover' over RESOURCES in the tool bar. The drop-down menu is hidden BEHIND the advertisement. Makes it real hard to use.

  • Apologies on the hidden menu. Sometimes the combination of ad software, ads, and javascript don't play nice.

    You can always click one of the main entries to see the menu's below them.

    As far as ads, they're designed to get your attention. Especially if you haven't used the products. Maybe I'm different than others, but I tend to ignore them after I've seen them a couple times. Until they change.

    It's the price we pay for "free" things. You pay with eyeballs. Same as commercials on TV. And in the movies now.

    BTW, we do try to minimize them. They're not on the sides of the articles like a lot of sites. No pop ups/unders, no off target ads. These are all SQL related. No crazy cover the content stuff like you see on CNet/MSNBC, etc.

  • Fair enough. Many, many sites have the motioned ads.

    How about moving them to the right where I can then shrink my window away from them? Check out http://www.nytimes.com for examples. They've got a boatload of ads and popups, but it's impact can be minimized.

    Don't get me wrong, the ads aren't going to keep me away from your site. My original mail was to question the degree to which the ads are present.

  • Interesting suggestion. We can talk about it, but honestly we have to walk a line with the vendors. We don't give them exposure, they don't pay us, SSC goes away. Or becomes a subscription model, something we HATE to consider.

    We'll debate about it a bit and thanks for the comment.

  • I for one don't really mind seeing the adverts. I agree, that's the price you pay to get something free. I just ignore the one's I've seen before.

    I just dislike it when they aren't user-friendly (like hiding drop down menus).

    In the case of the Boogie Tools one, could it be lowered so it doesn't cover the drop down menu? Just a thought.
