Certification

  • I am interested in doing the SQL server 2000 Database Administration Track Certification Exams. How many are these exams? What are their names? What is best to use to prepare for them? Please let me know as I need to start doing them next month and hopefully complete them before Christmas.

    Cheers

  • First thing is to go to http://www.microsoft.com/mcp and get the details on the exams there. For SQL, the best resource to start with is BOL (books-online) the latest can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/productdoc/2000/books.asp

  • The MS sites can be confusing at first - a clear explanation of certifications would be helpful.

The main exams for "SQL server 2000 Database Administration Track Certification" (MCDBA) are:

    70-228 DB Administration

    70-229 DB Design

    Plus one of the following:

    70-290 Win 2003 Server Environment

    70-291 Win 2003 Server Infrastructure

    70-215 Win 2000 Server

And pick one of a dozen elective exams.

Pass them all, and you are a MCDBA.

    Hope this helps!

I haven't taken the exams yet myself - I'm planning on taking 70-228 + 70-229 before the end of the year - so I don't feel I can give good advice on the best way to prepare. There are classes ($$$) online training ($$) or books. Plus you have sqlservercentral, where you can post questions and get answers for free!

There are lots of practice tests available on the web with questions that hopefully resemble questions on the actual exams. There are also "brain dumps", which claim to have authentic questions people remember from the exams. It seems to be generally considered unethical to use brain dumps.

    Good Luck.
