At one time IIS and SQL Server lived on the same machine and we used CDONTS to send mail. Now we are splitting the IIS and SQL Server machines.
Questions:
1)Can CDONTS still be used on the SQL Server box without installing IIS on it? If so does anyone have some detailed installation and configuration instructions for CDONTS.
2)Or should we switch to CDOSYS?

I think CDONTS is right. Dont have code here, but we have an app at work that handles email from applications that goes out via SMTP. Seems like there are a couple different versions of it, have to get the right one. It's possible to send smtp from any server as long as you allow the user to relay.

CDOSYS is a com object for windows 2000, CDONTS came with the NT 4 option pack. I would recommend you use CDOSYS.
Here's a good article on why http://orcsweb.com/articles/cdosys_cdonts.aspx
also here is a good article on SQL and CDOSYS

I use CDOSYS and hit a remote smtp server with no issues, just give it the ip of the smtp server - beware of mail relay restrictions.

Thank you for the reply. I'll check out these articles. Seems like moving to CDOSYS is probably the right move.
