I looked in the data folder of our Sql2k Data folder to find (directory listing):
...
master.mdf
17344kbDatabase File4/12/2003 11:08am
master$4IDR
17344kbFile4/15/2003 6:46am
mastlog.ldf
11520kb Database File4/12/2003 11:08am
masterlog$4IDR
11520kb File4/15/2003 6:46am
...
These "IDR" files are also present for the Model database.
As far as I can tell these files are not associated with
the actual databses of the same names. I don't know where they
came from or what they are doing. Any ideas?
TIA,
Bill
P.S. Note: we don't use Sql instances on this box
P.P.S The only refernece I can find on support.microsft.com to
master$4idr is for "Multiple Masters" under Powerpoint -- which isn't
installed on that box.

Are you using Filegroups? That's my only thought.

No, filegroups use ndf extension.

Can this apply?

Frank,
I'm still investigating but I think you may have hit the nail on the head!
