Backup Recommendation needed

  • I am going to maintain a 5GB database, with atlease every 30mts transaction log backup and daily night full backup. But, my client also wants a copy of the db everyday for their analysis. They might add schema changes also, which is not our problem. I thought of Log Shipping, but, it will make it as a readonly db. Also, client might not allow(not sure) me to link their sqlserver for log shipping. What is the best way to accomplish this? Will i be able to zip the 5gb everyday and ftp to their site or asking them to pick it up? Or will incremental backups will help? if yes, will this incremental backup affect my daily fullbackup? Thanks much for your reply.

  • 5GB is not that large so I would back it up, zip it and FTP to your client. You may look pkzip software.

In order for your client to change the schema, the database has to be recovered, you can't restore the differential backup once it is recovered.

  • Thanks Allen for your help.

    Can I expect a zip size of 800mb for 5gb ?

I am zipping my 900meg db to 15meg zip file now. To transfer 800meg file, how much time will it take thru a dedicated T1 line, and a non-dedicated route? Any idea?

  • Oops. Wrong. 900meg file to 150meg zip file.

  • 800mb sounds right. I usually get around 1:5 compression of DB backups too.
