Setting up Outlook for sending mail from SQL

  • I have setup Outlook 2000 on my SQL Server to use a POP account. (The account is on our Lotus Notes server and connected through the LAN so connectivity is no problem.) I have tested sending e-mails from both the Outlook client and from within SQL Server. Both tests work fine.

Next, I setup a test job to send me a notification every minute. Now here's the problem.

When I am logged in to the SQL Server with the SQL Server service account AND I have Outlook open, I receive my messages about every 10 minutes. So, every ten minutes, I receive ten e-mails. I checked the Mail Delivery options in Outlook and the option to send mail immediately when connected is checked. The delay is annoying but bearable.

When I am logged in to the SQL Server with the SQL Server service account but the Outlook client IS NOT open, I do not receive any of my e-mails. If I open up the client, all of my queued up e-mails are sent.

We like to keep all of our servers, when possible, with no one logged in. This makes it easier if someone needs to log in as themselves to the server.

I have two questions. One, is there a way to not be logged in but allow my e-mails to be sent? Two, is there some way to make Outlook stop the delay?

  • One question is the sqlagent service acount also the outlook account?

For the delay of 10 minutes did you check the refressing setting on the lotes notes server? Also you have a simular setting in the lotes notes client.

  • The SQL Server Agent service account IS the same account as the Outlook account.

I found the answer to my 10 minute delay. There is a setting in Outlook that tells it how often to check for new messages. That same setting affects sending and receiving.
