I am currently re-instaling SP4 for SQL 7. The process got to the point of installing the MDAC and has hung there. Its been about 30 min. Task Manager says the process is running and the hard drive light is occasionally flickering. Should I be concerned? Is this unusual?

Yes, it is unusually and it should fail. Usually this happens when a piece is in use and the resource locked. I would cancel it if possible or wait until fails, then reboot and rerun SP4 as soon as server is up. Personally I stop the SQL Services before doing the SPs to ensure it is not locking a resource and that connections are clear. If it doesn't timeout reboot, but be prepared for the install to be an issue (I hope you made a full backup for the just in case scenrio, but usually it is ok).

I spoke to microsoft. They had me download MDAC 2.5. The server had 2.1. This solved the problem!
