I am trying to install 2000 on a laptop from our SQL Server CD. The first time I tried, I got the error, "Installation of the Microsoft Data Access Components Failed (-1)." I never have got this error before.
I rebooted and tried again. This time I got an error, "The following software package you want to install is not signed: C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO\SET379.tmp." I pressed OK, then got the same error as before.

Try downloading and installing MDAC before the SQL Server install. This has been known to resolve some of the install issues. MDAC site:

For whatever reason, MDAC seems the most flaky piece of the SQL Server install process. MDAC 2.6 is what shipped with SQL 2K. MDAC 2.7 has been out a while and should be fine as well.

Getting MDAC 2.6 SP2 appears to have cured it. Thanks.
