All excellent points, Grant. Earlier this year I attended my first national conference since the mid-'90s and all the face-to-face conversations – particularly with those I had only known through listserv email, forum posts and Zoom forums – were so valuable for establishing or firming relationships with colleagues. You are dead-on when it comes to those hallway conversations, and boy, the things you can learn chatting up strangers at lunch.
Finally, the sleep: I was only getting about 4 hours per night at that conference, getting up early to polish my presentations, skipping meals and operating on pure adrenaline. It all worked out fine until I woke up sick on the final day of the conference and had to cancel my final presentation. Shaking the hands of dozens of people from across a couple of continents and all their cooties along for the ride does not mix well with inadequate nourishment and sleep. Duh.
While I have your attention, thanks for all you have taught me!

Yeah, you do have to take care of yourself. Otherwise things get rocky. And happy to help anywhere I can.
