Nice one!
With this set of original data, it's not really doing much, since all the ID-s are different, so the inner SELECT will effectively yield the original table, and the CROSS APPLY doesn't have anything to split.
Just because you're right doesn't mean everybody else is wrong. -
I couldn't believe it when I ran across this pattern in someone's code with the ID as a PK
