Applied Azure connect feature pack instead of regular GDR

  • Hello All,

I'm basically new to SQL server and I've mistakenly applied "5040944 Security update for SQL Server 2016 SP3 Azure Connect Feature Pack: July 9, 2024 "  to the servers instead of my senior suggested "5040946 Security update for SQL Server 2016 SP3 GDR: July 9, 2024 " ,  will this cause any problems or is this fine? currently the sql server transferred to 13.0.7* version from 13.0.6* version after the patch,  if new patches release for 13.0.6* in future, can we apply that and bring the server back to 13.0.6* version?

  • 2016 is a dead product now, only time it will get an update is if there is a CVE that needs fixing.

You’ve got less than 2 years to get off that version and to something newer if you want to maintain support and updates after July 2026.

But to answer your question, no, you’ll need to install any new Azure Feature Pack updates to keep the version to the highest version it will be.

So if a new CVE patch was to be released you would have to get the one that is 13.0.7* so that you’re always increasing in version number.

You could go and uninstall that update and reinstall the one your senior wanted you too, but it’s neither here nor there really to do so, given the likelihood of another patch for 2016 being slim (never say never as a CVE might be found)

  • Thank you, will it cause any problems if I keep the server at 13.0.7* instead of 13.0.6* , when I searched, both the latest patches fix same CVE's only.. do the recent upgrade to 13.0.7* cause any disruptions to the normal activities happening on the server?

  • No there’s no differences between the patches
