replication from log-shipped database

  • I haven't been able to find a definitive answer via Google so I am hoping someone here can help.

We have a database on ProdServer.  This database is log shipped to BIServer, and so is in standby/readonly mode on BIServer.  I've been asked to replicate the database on BIServer to an Azure instance.

Is this possible?  Or do we need to replicate the ProdServer copy?

  • It would all depend on requirements etc.

But you could use SSIS / ADF and ETL out the log shipped copy to Azure, custom scripting, BACPAC (if the DB size is small enough) etc

You couldn't use log shipping again or a form of replication as the database on the BIServer isn't in a state which will allow that to happen, so if you wanted to use log shipping or replication it would again need to come from the ProdServer.

  • That's what I was thinking, thanks for confirming.
