Error configuring SSRS. The database engine instance is not valid.

  • Hi,

This is a strange one. The error indicates that the database engine instance is not valid, but according to the documentation it should be valid. Does anyone have any ideas why this is occurring? Thanks in advance.

Error: The database engine instance you selected is not valid for this edition of report server.

    Current Report Server

    Instance ID: SSRS

    Edition: SQL Server Standard

    Product Version: 15.0.1102.1047

    Current Database Server

    Microsoft SQL Server 2019 (RTM-CU18)

    Edition: Developer Edition (64-bit)

    Product Version: 15.0.4261.1

    Windows Server 2019 Standard 10.0

According to the documentation, the supported catalog database SQL Server edition is Standard or higher. I'm sure Developer edition is higher than Standard, am I mistaken?

  • It's probably some internal check that says you cannot use a licensed software (Your SSRS Standard server) against a free/dev edition to prevent some licensing issues.

Can you install SSRS as developer, or find a paid for server Std/Ent to use as the repository server?

  • I am almost positive that Ant-Green is correct.

The question is why are you doing this? If this is a development environment, SSRS should have been installed as a free (developer) edition.
