Does the order of parameters in a command-line install matter?

  • I don't have a machine handy to test this, so I'm looking to see if anyone knows offhand.  Otherwise, I'll fire up a test tonight when I get home...

If I'm using the command line to install SQL Server, does the order of the switches matter?  There's nothing in the official documentation from Microsoft to indicate one way or the other if the order matters.

  • For anyone who comes across this with the same question:  No, the order of the switches does not matter.

Got home and threw up a test VM to give it a run-through.

Thanks...I was one wondering, following and didn't have time to test it.

No problem and glad I helped!
I suspect this is one of those things that nobody really thinks about, as they typically just start keying the switches in the order they come across them in the documentation (which is sort of not really a logical order...)

I'm working on documentation for my servers, and I wanted to document out the cmd line I used to install with everything in an easy-to-follow order.

I like those kind of questions as I never really thought about it until you posted. I checked all of my scripts, docs and I just followed the order exactly as documented, just as you would think. Then I started wondering about those occasional odd errors when someone else installs - so good to know it's not anyone screwing up the order as it won't make a difference
Guess I'm still stuck with blaming install issues on Windows updates and .Net or VS runtime pieces. 🙂
