PowerBI and Automation testing

  • Dear Forum members,

I write because I was searching on the internet about two topics that I need to step into.

    PowerBI and Test Automation

For PowerBI, can you please let me know your advices for a good online course that I can take? I would like to understand PowerBI properly in order to implement it in my company. Did someone already did online courses , if so, what do you recommend?

For Automatic testing, I have been reading about several tools on the market that are available for autmation testing. We are a Agile team of SQL Server developers. We develop SSIS packages, Data Marts, Cubes and Reports (SSRS). All of this in Microsoft environment. what are you using?   I don't know about selenium or trecendis?

Than you very much for your opinions

For Power BI, there are plenty of resources available online, even you can start to learn in Youtube. A lot of useful videos had been already posted by Microsoft itself, which would be a great place to start. There are the two things you'd need to start learning about Power BI,

    Power BI Desktop

    Power BI Service

Once learned, you'd need to learn how to integrate SSRS reports with Power BI and other advanced topics. DAX is the another thing you'd need to concentrate. How to implicitly / explicitly declaring measures in DAX and reuse of them in Power BI desktop. Connecting variety of Data sources  (Structured, Unstructured, Semi structured data) in Power BI. What is SAAS, PAAS etc., REST API, Web connectors etc.,....

Regarding Testing Automation, I'd need to gather more information before commenting...

Thank you for your reply. It is exactly because of the huge quantity of things to learn that I would like to have guidance from the beginning. Basically courses that would teach me from the begining. Any idea of a good online school to attend this courses?

Could you please clarify "the beginning" ? Did you mean from traditional BI concepts ? I'd suggest you to learn SSAS Tabular model with DAX first, this can be learned thru online classes, even if you google, you can get many online tutors. Ex: EDX ( I'm not suggesting EDX, Just I've been thru many online searches with this as well) . Once you've gathered the knowledge on SSAS Tabular in memory model with DAX, then Power BI would be very easy. You can even learn online by yourself. Apart from that, I exactly don't know which online tutor to point out.

I believe in one thing as always, Self learning. I'd learned thru this way only....

  • Just chipping in, the tabular model is almost identical on Excel PowerPivot, SSAS Tabular, PowerBI desktop and PowerBI.com, very handy as one can model one of those and use (more or less) on any of the other.
    😎
I do lot of tabular model work on a £100 Windows 10 tablet running PowerBI Desktop😉
