Hello,
Is SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 completely separate versions?
I currently have the "out of the box" SQL Server 2008 installed on my machine but need to utilize functionality that is part of BIDS that comes in 2008 R2. However, when I attempt to install, the only option I get is for SQL Express and while the R2 installs "successfully", my SQL Server and BIDS does not take effect.
I am curious to know if they are 2 separate products???

2008 and 2008R2 are two different products. Each of them have different releases and version numbers. They're very similar, but are different enough not to have been considered a Service Pack.
I'm not sure what's happening with your installation, but you should have 2 versions installed if you fully installed 2008R2. If you only were able to install Express, you might have only the 2008 tools with two instances, one 2008 and one of 2008R2 Express edition.

Thank you for your reply. I have 2008 installed and was trying to apply SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack. I am thinking what I need to do is get a copy of the SQL Server 2008 R2 release first, then apply the Service Pack. I am going to try using the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express version. What I am really trying to do is get some BIDS SSRS lookupset functionality that starts in SQL Server 2008 R2, so I am not sure if downloading Express will solve the problem or not.

That'll work about as well as trying to apply the SQL 2016 SP1 to SQL 2014.
Separate versions, different installations, completely separate instances.
I don't believe SSRS or BIDS are included in SQL Express, so installing express probably won't help you.
