Windows 11 Pro

  • Hi everyone

I just got a new machine.  It is running Windows 11 Pro.  I am trying to install SS2019 but I am coming across issues.  I am getting below error:

    "Oops...

A required file could not be downloaded. This could mean the version of the installer is no longer supported. Please download again from the download site. https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=866662"

I am downloading developer edition from here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-downloads

Microsoft says Windows 11 Pro is compatible with SS2019:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/install/hardware-and-software-requirements-for-installing-sql-server-2019?view=sql-server-ver15

What should I do to fix this?

    Thank you

  • One thing I should mention...

I did a lot of development work on my old machine running Windows 10 Pro SS2019 and SSIS.  I am planning on moving that development to my new computer. Overall, I am pretty flexible when it comes to versions etc but the end goal is ensuring that the work I did on my Windows 10 Pro machine moves over to Windows 11 without any issues.  I prefer to not re-write code.

    Thanks in advance

  • My guess - you got a bad download.  I would try re-downloading it and give it another shot.  Failing that, I would guess that something is blocking some downloads for you.  What I mean is that you have some firewall (software or hardware) that is blocking downloading from the SS installer OR your antivirus is blocking the download.

I would review the logs (SQL Server installer, windows, antivirus) and see if anything stands out.  Some of the logs should have something logged to tell you what went wrong.

The above is all just my opinion on what you should do.
As with all advice you find on a random internet forum - you shouldn't blindly follow it.  Always test on a test server to see if there is negative side effects before making changes to live!
I recommend you NEVER run "random code" you found online on any system you care about UNLESS you understand and can verify the code OR you don't care if the code trashes your system.

I tried to download the installation file on my old computer and still getting same issue.  It looks like the file that microsoft is providing is corrupted somehow.  Really surprising.
