  Have an old box windows 2008 enterprise edition OS which runs active passive sql server 2008 server. Want to upgrade to 2008r2 these are older physical so complete rebuild not necessary. Is it possible to do an in place upgrade to sql 2008r2?

  you can run an inplace upgrade, install passive nodes then failover and complete remaining nodes.

  Clean install and migration would be my preference
