Recommended Transaction log backup script?

  • Hi all,

Of course I can create one using a maintenance plan wizard, but is it better to use / does anyone have a bespoke one ?

    Thanks,

  • The scripts here are very good

however, if you don't mind me saying, you may also find thsi helpful http://www.sqlservercentral.com/stairway/73776/

    EDIT

Also - there's a very good free eBook on backup and restore available from https://www.simple-talk.com/books/sql-books/sql-backup-and-restore/

  • I'd suggest taking a look at the Minion tools, in your case Minion Backup[/url].

  • On an aside, anyone here use SQL Backup Pro? Any big advantages over native MSSQL processes?

Depends on SQL version. In earlier versions, you couldn't compress and encrypt backups. SQL Backup Pro does this. The scheduling, mirroring to other locations, auto checkdb, are features that are easy to implement in Backup Pro. Can be done by you, but takes time and effort, and debugging since you're building software. If your time is worth saving $$, then you can do that.

    Disclosure, I work for Redgate.

I work for the company so...

    Absolutely!

The biggest advantage is in multi-server management. You can see how backups are going across all your servers and all your databases from a single location. That's huge. We also supply backup encryption, but, we do the encryption after we do compression, which makes it superior to the native tools. We also have a better compression engine, so you get smaller, faster backups (faster assuming you've got spare CPU cycles to do the compression work). We also can automatically copy your backups to a second location as a part of the backup process, no extra steps involved. We can even store your stuff on the cloud for you.

Oh, and I forgot, a wizard for setting up backup testing (aka, a restore).
