CPU

  • Hi everyone

I am in the market for a new computer.  I have been comparing various Xeon processors and I am a bit confused by a few things. Intel lists out the specs for their processors.  If one processor has scalability of "4S" and another has "1S only" what exactly does this mean?

    Thank you

Just to ask the question, "new computer" for what?  Server?  Desktop? Laptop? Intended "volume"?

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

  • it is definitely a desktop.  workload is running queries against DB and making updates to DB by writing new data.  way more reads than writes. the only write is updating db with new daily data.  no OLTP type workload.

i looked at glennsqlperformance.com website and got ideas there but that website is from 2020. its 2022 so i am sure that info is out of date.  just looking for some reliable source on how to pick the right cpu

  • I'd help on the hardware side of things but I'm not a hardware kind of guy anymore.  I did see that your choices may be even more complex because there's not only an "S" suffix (which I think stands for "sockets") but there's also an "S" prefix.  Since I'm  not actually savvy in that area, I can't talk to it but thought I'd let you know.
