Restart Windows Server with SQL after updates

  • Dear all - Just wondered, is it ok to just simply restart a Server which has SQL2008 residing on it, after applying Windows Updates?

  • If the updates require a Windows restart, go for it. You'd better do it when users are not using the database, so plan downtime with them.

  • I take it it's safe to just restart without stopping the SQL Service?

    Many thanks

  • Perfectly. To be honest, it's fairly safe (at least from SQL's side) to just power off without any form of clean shutdown (my home server will attest to that, having had power cut 2+ times a week for the last 2 months).

  • Thanks very much for that, just looking for some reassurance.
