Urgent - Reporting services migration and upgrade to 2008 R2

  • Hello,

We have a task to move reporting services 2005 instance to new servers with 2008 R2 version.

This is what I did so far:

    1. Since web and database servers are different, I first installed sql server on database server.

    2. Installed reporting services on web server.

    3. Restored ReportServer and ReportserverTempdb to the new 2008 R2 database server.

    4. Configured reporting services and selected resored reportserver and reportservertempdb on the new server.

I can access the URLs and reports now.

This is my first time touching reporting services. Our reporting services guy in the team is gone and we have a very tight deadline to deliver test, stage and prod environments in next 3 weeks.

We have over 250 reports. From the collected info, I believe that there is no custom configuration.

Our Development team has given us estimate of 2 manual months offshore and 80 hours onsite to convert all reports to 2008 R2. First of all, we don't have that kind of time and second, I am trying to find out what is left to do now and whether it is worth paying so much money to development.

I searched the forums and articles but I am not clear on when to conclude that the migration is done. Do I need to open every report in BIDs and save it in order to upgrade it? If yes, is there any script or utility availabel to do that?

    Thanks,

    Nikita

  • Do you have the solution files to hand?

If so make a backup of them in their 2005 state, then open the originals in BIDS 2008, it should run you through the upgrade process.

Obviously if there is any errors they will need fixing but if not, then you can simply just redeploy the solution to the 2008 reporting server.

Also take a look for a tool called RSScriptor if you don't have the solution files, it will pull the RDL files from 2005 and then you can open them upgrade them in BIDS 2008.

  • Anthony,

    Pardon my ignorance.

First approach I thought of using RSSscripter but the following link does not work:

From what I understand, you do not need to backup-restore dbs with that to new location. I have already done it.

If you could tell how to generate solutions files, I can work on it myself to save time.

    Thanks

  • You need to backup the solution files not to backup the databases, so that you have the solution in a 2005 format as once you have upgraded them you cannot downgrade, its to ensure that you still have the originals.

RSScriptor is used to pull the RDL files from the reporting server, you then create a new solution in BIDS and then add in the RDL files which RSScriptior has saved for you in the location you told it to save them.

I have attached a copy of the tool.

  • Thanks for the scriter tool.

I will check out the scripting options.

    Thanks,

    Nikita

  • You say you have restored the SQL 2005 ReportServer db and ReportServerTempdb to your SQL 2008 R2 system and are using those with the SQL 2008 R2 binaries.

If so, I do not think you have a system that will be supportable by Microsoft. You need to use the SQL 2008 R2 report server databases with SQL 2008 R2.
