I’m trying to buy a book for reference and learn SQL. I have Java background and a lot of people recommend either of those books by Ben Gan.
What is the difference between those books and which one is suitable for someone new to SQL?

There is actually quite a bit of overlap between those two books. However, the Fundamentals book goes much slower in explaining SQL concepts as well as T-SQL specifically. Where as the other book goes through the basics much faster, so it covers a wider degree of material. If you've never really done SQL at all before, the Fundamentals book is better. If you're expanding your T-SQL skills or moving from another SQL language, the Querying book is better. I hope that helps. Itzik's work is amazing.
