  • I have 2 servers of 16 CPU so how much licenses from Microsoft my customer should buy for sql server 2008?

    Thanks

  • how many physical cpu's are in the box 16?

    or is it 2 cpus, 4 cores, hyperthreaded? ((2 x 4) x 2) = 16cores = 2 licences

    or is it 4 cpus, 2 cores, hyperthreaded? ((4 x 2) x 2) = 16cores = 4 licences

    or is it 2cpus, 8 cores, not hyperthreaded (2x8) = 16cores = 2 licences

    or is it 16cpus, 1 core, not hyperthreaded (1x16) = 16cores = 16 licences

    or is it 8cpus, 1 core, hyperthreaded ((1 x 8) x 2) = 16cores = 8 licences

also do you need per cpu licences, can you not get aware with server and cal based licences?

what is the user base using the server?

is it going to be used for web site hosting, either WWW or intranet/extranet

  • Dose it mean?

No. of physical CPU's = No. of Licences

    I have 8 CPU's Hyperthreaded.

    Q. what is the user base using the server?

    A. Can you give a short example for this.

Q.Is it going to be used for web site hosting, either WWW or intranet/extranet

A.It is used behind a Payroll Application.

    Thanks

  • yes, it is licenced on physical CPU's not cores.

for example, I could go and purchase a server now with 4 physical CPU's, these CPU's each have 10 cores, if I then enable hyperthreading, Windows and SQL see 80 cores, but I only purchase 4 CPU licences as thats how many CPU's I have in the server.

So if you have 8 physical CPU's in the server you need 8 CPU licences.

    PLEASE NOTE

In SQL2012/Denali, it DOES change to PER CORE licencing. Please check the SQL11 forum for a topic I started with links to the new PER CORE licencing whitepapers.

User base is the number of users accessing the application? For example, you say this is going to be for payroll? How many users will have access to the payroll application? 10? 20? 1000? If it is a small number, it could be more cost effictive to purchase a Server licence and then the amount of users CAL licences.

In the example above, 4 CPU licences for Enterprise is roughly £100,000, if only 10 people use this server and is only used for Payroll and nothing else, I could buy a server licences at around £10,000 and then 10 User CALS at £124 which gives a total cost of £11,240, which is quite a saving from £100,000.

But for each new user using the payroll app, you need to buy a NEW CAL for that user, (unless an existing user has left the company), there is a tipping point, in that there will become a point where Server + CAL licences cost more than CPU licences so it is finding the balance.

If you start putting more and more apps on the server with more and more users you need more and more CAL's.

If the server is accessed by websites, then you can ONLY licence the server by CPU's as you CANNOT say how many people will be accessing the websites.

  • Is there any license required for Tape backup also?

    Thanks

  • Depends on you tape device and the software that its using.

You could add a dump device to SQL and backup to that.

Or if its mounted as a disk drive with a drive letter then backup to that

E.G if your using CommVault then you need to buy the nessesary CommVault licences.

Read the document I attached it details it all in there

  • If you have 8 CPU sockets and each socket has a CPU with 1 core plus hyperthreading, then you must be running on old kit.

You will find it cheaper to buy a new twin-socket server with 4-core or 6-core CPUs plus hyperthreading and pay for 2 CPU licences than it will be to pay for 8 CPU licences with your current kit. Plus SQL Server will run much faster on the new kit.

Licensing does change with SQL 2012, but you can decide when you want to upgrade. IMHO the current licencing and feature mix will deter many people from upgrading from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012 due to the big cost differential.
