R2 patches availability - Migration

  • Hello,

I'll be migrating (fom SQL2k) to SQL Server 2008 R2 by mid-december, but one thing that makes me a littie anxious is the fact the existent patches are not releases for general availability but intended "only if you suffer any of the described issues".

This leaves me with the vanilla version for a production server. Never done that before!

What has been you're experience with this? Is the patch 4 intended to be used on any SQL installation or truly only if I see any issue? My concern is that the current patches are not yet fully tested and by installing it may introduce a problem into the server.

  • They are "dogfood" at Microsoft. So far I have not seen any problem with any of them.

  • Cumulative Updates are only intended to be applied if you have the issue. You have not installed yet so don't have the issue. 🙂

I would install the vanilla version. We have been running a vanilla install on a cluster for a few months with no issues. Remember R2, although on a different release path and a different version is very much a build on top of SQL2008.
