Hi
I have a maintenance plan that backs up of our logs every hour. Is it okay to just go in and delete the old back up files from the server or are they needed in the event of a restore?
Thanks
Matt

The backups are needed if you need to recover to a point in time between the full backups. If you do a full backup at midnight each day, and your server has a data error/crash/disaster at 4pm, only the log backups from midnight to 4pm can recover the data changed in that time.
Typically people will think about data loss when deciding how many log backups to keep. It might be only since the last full, might be since the last 2 fulls. It's up to you, depending on your tolerance for loss.
There is a task in the maintenance plans that can remove old log backups for you.
