Reporting Services 2008 - Forms Authentication - Authorization Cookie not being passed back to the Client (Website Login)

  • Hello Reporing Services Gurus!

We have a production version of a ASP.Net website that uses Forms Authentication as the security extension and uses Forms Auth to get to the Report Server 2008.

We are trying to get this version working in other environments for many reasons.

I'm tring to get the client to talk to the report server.

Unfortunately, none of us whom are still employed at our company built the application, nor did any of us do any of the configuration.

No one did any documentation because ((yawn)) documentation is SO boring!

Additionally, I put in a support call to Microsoft! I am very disappointed. I submitted a case for this issue and Microsoft support turned it down because they don't support Forms Authentication because it is considered an Advisory case, and not a break-fix. Really???

Okay - for you Gurus, - please resond:

I thought I had everything configured properly in ALL of the config files for Forms Auth. They are all pointing to the same location for everything.

I have done a fiddler HTTP trace for the HTTP traffice and what I know is that the authentication cookie is not being sent back to the client and I am not sure why. I also know that the name is being changed on the response.

Can someone PLEASE help? I am in inscruciating pain over this! Where is my cookie??? 😉

    Thanks in advance.

  • So - I got the forms authentication working. I can log into the application. I see that the authentication cookie is being passed back in the http response. So, I think that issue is fixed. I had to completely rewrite the website web.config file. I'm really not sure what was wrong, but it's fixed now.

Now I have another problem that needs a result, and I think it's an SSRS / SQL Server issue.

    Here are the particulars:

We have an ASP.NET application with Forms Authentication and SSRS 2008. I can log into the application and the user authenticates fine. The cookie is returned to the client in the HTTP response, however reporting services will not render the reports.

I can log into the application and successfully access the sites non-reporting services functionality.

This is the error I get:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues including:

Internet connectivity may have been lost (It is not.)

The website is temporarily unavailable (It is not.)

The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable. (I can ping the DNS.)

The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain. (There is a listing for the website's domain in the DNS.)

There might be a typing error in the address. (There isn't a typo.)

I can log into the report server and render the reports through report manager.

Does any one have any idea of what might be going on? I am going crazy!

    Thanks in advance.

  • No responses? Do you think I'm posted to the right forum?

  • Hello,

Can you post the step-by-step instructions for setting up forms authentication for SSRS 2008 R2 ?
